Participants will also learn to add layering, levels and dance embellishments to introductory Bellydance steps to create fresh and interesting dance solos that can be performed on stage, at home, at parties or on the dance floor of any "hip" DFW night spot! Be prepared to laugh, dance and sweat! Women of all ages and fitness levels are welcome.

What do I Wear and Bring With Me?
Midriff bearing sports top and sports pants, a unitard or form fitting workout clothes that will allow the instructor to see your body alignment. Be sure to place a scarf around your hips to accent movement in that area. Please avoid wearing items that make noise when you dance or could fall to the floor and become lodged in the foot of another dancer. Feel free to wear jazz, lyrical or ballet shoes or go barefoot. Bring a towel!

Your Instructor:
Keva Larthridge-Mack is a professional life strategies coach and lifestyle coordinator at Kokopelli’s Wellness Spa and Yoga Center in Frisco, TX. Keva holds a degree in Elementary Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce as well as professional certifications in yoga, personal training, meditation and transpersonal counseling. Keva has been a student of Tribal Fusion Bellydance since 1996 and has been a bellydance instructor since 2001.

www.raqsazar.com/studentinstructor.html

The third paragraph is the one that's making me ponder a lot. The author apparently feels that the fusion of Middle Eastern dance with other forms of dance is a disservice, and that "Instructors owe their students [stylistic] truth."

On the one hand, I can see where she's coming from. She views Middle Eastern / North African dance as a cultural thing, and probably fears the dilution of said culture. It's not that much different from me being dismayed that words like "d'oh" have actually started appearing in the dictionary.

On the other hand, I really enjoy the fusion. I *like* warming up to Sir Mix-A-Lot or the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. I like listening through my rock'n'roll collection and realizing I'm doing moves I learned in class. And whether I should be or not, I'm actually pretty proud of my choreographing something out of friggin' Star Wars. =)

I'm really more at the "thinking out loud" stage on this right now, but I was inspired to post here because of the HippieShake logo, where the "Eastern" in "Middle Eastern Dancing" is crossed out and replaced with "Southern!". I think that's a great reflection of at least Hayati's (and probably Erindira's) attitude of starting with the Middle Eastern style and then tweaking it (Hayati has said she'll steal from anything!). I know I've seen the phrase "Middle Eastern Dancing" used a lot; I guess maybe it's because folks want to duck whatever sleazy connotations "belly dancing" has? But maybe those are the better words to use to describe what's being born now, and then "Middle Eastern Dance" can be reserved for the traditionalists who are actually teaching the moves of the culture. And here I was just using it 'cause it's a shorter phrase. =)

I came to a little realization this weekend that I overextend myself tremendously with dance trying to do all of the things that everyone asks me to do. That is now over and I'm going to actually focus on MY dancing and not everyone elses. I have not practiced for more than 15 minutes at a time in over a year. (not an exaggeration) Imagine how kick ass I'd be if I practed the hour and a half, two hours a day that I should, or if I actually took the time to think about a song I want to perform to instead of picking it out and burning the CD 10 minutes before I walk out the door. SO as of this moment:

I am cancelling all private and public classes until further notice. I will still teach the HippieShake workshops. Any classes at my house or elsewhere are cancelled.

I have a lot of goals I want to achieve and a lot of work to get there. There will be a new and much improved website, a workshops series focusing on specific aspects such as sword, musicality, timing, stamina as well as more general advanced technique workshops and choreography. But to do these right I have to be able to focus on them and get a curriculum together.

I'll still pop up at a hafla and such and will still be dancing at the hookah and other locations so I'm not ducking out, just taking myself in a new direction.

This is going on a couple of local tribes so you'll see dups.

Hugs,

Okay, so I've been mulling this one over for a while and I've finally decided I NEED to say something before I explode. I had an incident recently that has really bothered me. I placed an ad for one of the HippieShake events with the usual RSVP option. Most people use the RSVP for either "yes" or "maybe" answers (since it isn't really necessary to say "no" to an event). Anyway, I was really shocked and, frankly, angered by another "professional" dancer's rude remark on the ad. She had RSVP'd to the ad as "no" and then proceeded to write a very disparaging remark about the dancer/instructor in question.

In my opinion, this sort of cattiness (forgive me, cat friends) is unacceptable. Hey, we've probably all had moments with others that were less than great. I know I've had my ups and downs with different dancers over the past dozen years (gawd, I feel old! lol). But I'd like to challenge all of us to do better. Just because another dancer's style of costume or performance isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean she's wrong. It just means she's different. Personally, I LOVE the differences in bellydance. I really get a kick out of the Kismet haflas for that reason because any given show I get to see the range of dance available in this area.

Hi everyone,

I'm posting this in different tribes to make sure I catch everyone in the DFW area.

Brandy and I just got back from Houston where we had the incredible opportunity to spend the weekend with our friends Zymirrah and Sahira of Urban Gypsy and meet new friends Kaeshi and Kittarina of PURE. What an awesome experience! If you have not had or taken the opportunity to see their video please, Please do so right now.

www.puredance.org/video.html

Brandy and I are very interested in bringing a PURE chapter to the DFW area and are curious if there is much interest from our local dance sisters in being a part of this. We feel it would bring us all together to help create a common bond that could help share the Belly dance experience with many people in our community. This is something unlike any other Belly dance show or event. To find out more information about this movement please connect to the PURE Website:

www.puredance.org

Kaeshi and Kittarina are extremely wonderful teachers and shared so much with all of us. The unity we all felt by the time the workshop was done was more inspiring than anything I have ever experienced before. The common bond between dance sisters from all over the area and from so many different levels of dance experience was so moving.

I really encourage you to visit the sight, see the video and let us know what you think.

Thanks,

If anybody's in the market for sound-editing software, I just had a good experience with Audacity, which is a completely free download at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It works with MP3 files, but not M4A files. I mention this because I use iTunes to import songs from CD to my computer, and it uses M4A unless you explicitly tell it otherwise. Other softwares designed expressly for "ripping" may well default to MP3, so no problem there.

One very strange and humorous "flaw" in Audacity is that it doesn't already come with the code needed to save your work as an MP3 file (it can OPEN them just fine, but it can't MAKE them). In order to make MP3 files with Audacity, you need a file called "lame_enc.dll". If you have ripping software (not iTunes), use your computer's Search feature to see if you already have this file. If you don't, you can get it at http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?lame_enc

NOTE: Always, always, ALWAYS scan for viruses on everything you download. I had no problems, but that doesn't mean you won't!

Anyway, I used Audacity to trim off the end of a song to shorten it, and I can at least say it works great for that. The "Fit To Window" command was a real boon - I knew I wanted to cut the song around 1:23 or 1:24, so I started by cutting away everything after 1:30 (which was a good 5 minutes!), then used "Fit To Window" to literally stretch out the portion that remained, so I had more room to work and be more precise in my trimming.

I suspect that song-trimming is what most of us would be using sound-editing software to do, and I'll recommend it for that alone - epecially given the price! =) It also looks like it has a lot more functionality to mix and splice pieces together, so I plan to play with it a lot more in the future!

Ok, this is just at the "kicking it around" stage, but some dancers have suggested to me that a web site for hiring D/FW bellydancers/troupes for events is something our community needs/desires. I used to be a web site designer, so I think I could handle this project. I haven't considered the yearly/monthly fee (which would be nominal, of course). The site would basically be a database of dancers/ troupes in the community available for special events. Each dancer/ troupe would have the following posted about her/it:
1. pic(s)
2. bio
3. contact info
4. availability
5. pricing (if you want this published. If not, the interested party would have to contact you).
6. web site ( if applicable)
Is anyone interested in this kind of thing?

I also wanted to thank Erindira for presenting today's workshop. I know I'm biased, but she's really great and SO informative about zills...not just playing them, but what to look for when shopping for zills. I know the girls had a great time and they sounded fantastic!! :)
